A 23-year-old Tushar Bhatia, a technical assistant at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), committed suicide on the company's campus located in the Electronic City on the outskirts of Bangalore. Bhatia, a native of Kanpur and son of an SBI manager based in Mumbai, had joined TCS in February. He jumped off the ninth-floor terrace of the TCS building on Friday afternoon. According to police officials involved in the investigation of the suicide, Bhatia had been suffering from kidney problems and was diagnosed with a kidney problem a couple of months ago. Treatment had not been successful, and he was depressed about it. Bhatia had just returned to work after taking a 15-day leave for treatment.

The police suspect that Bhatia was under pressure due to health and related work issues, and they are investigating the matter further to determine the exact cause of his suicide. Bhatia had completed his engineering in electronics from YCCE in Nagpur.

This is the second suicide of a young software engineer on a TCS campus in Bangalore. In August last year, Sudarshan Guttedar, a 22-year-old from Belgaum, died after falling from the 11th floor of a facility located at the International Technology Park in the city. Work-related problems were reported to be among the reasons for the suicide.

Wipro, another IT firm, also faced a series of suicides in 2009-10, including one on campus. The company initiated confidential employee counselling services and "work buddy" concepts in response to the suicides. At that time, the company's human resources head had stated that every generation has its issues and that this generation needs extra support.
